Fort Madison, IA
The city of Fort Madison serves as one of two seats of Lee County, located in the southeast corner of Iowa along the Mississippi River. Fort Madison covers 9.5 square miles of land, housing a population of just under 11,000 people.
The city was founded at the site of the area’s first U.S. military fort, and today it thrives by the motto “Always Moving.” History continues to lead the community. The Fort Madison Downtown Commercial Historic District maintains a collection of 19th century storefronts. The Park-to-Park Residential Historic District is a section of homes representing the Gothic, Victorian and Tudor era. The city is home to the last remaining double swing-span bridge on the Mississippi River, the Fort Madison Toll Bridge.
